About Principia

Principia is an underwriting agency owned by its principals, Chris Newton and Hawkes Bay Holdings, the latter operating through Aquila Underwriting.


Chris Newton - Managing Director

Chris Newton started his insurance career in the insurance broking community with Sedgwick International, dealing with international and North American non-marine property and casualty business. In 1987 that led to an overseas position in Saudi Arabia with Arab Commercial Enterprises, developing and underwriting on behalf of Middle Eastern based insurers, non-marine and aviation property, casualty, professional indemnity and financial institution business into the regional and international insurance markets. In 1990 Chris returned to the UK and joined Sedgwick’s Professional Indemnity and Financial Institution division, leaving to join Media/Professional Insurance in 1996, underwriting media, technology, cyber and professional liability business. In 2000 Chris assumed the role of M/PI London’s Managing Director, becoming Vice President Underwriting - Media and Technology Division - after M/PI’s acquisition by AXIS in May 2007. After joining Pembroke Syndicate 4000 in March 2009 to form their Media and Technology Division, Chris had the opportunity of forming his own underwriting vehicle, Principia Underwriting.

Since 1996, Chris has specialised in underwriting media content, cyber and technology professional liability risks, latterly incorporating information security business interruption and crisis management covers. Chris has spoken extensively on these subjects at UK and overseas industry forums. Chris is Managing Director of Principia, an Associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute and a Chartered Insurer.     


Our core offerings comprise a suite of specialist liability, business interruption, brand protection and crisis management insurance solutions, with a focus on the creative media, information technology and corporate industry sectors. Our main insurance policies currently comprise:
  • a Media policy that responds to claims arising out of any form of media activities, published or broadcast content, created or disseminated in any format anywhere in the world;
  • a long term Visual Arts policy for web, mobile, radio, theatrical or televised films, programmes, adverts and clips, both individually, as series or libraries;
  • a Technology policy aimed at service providers in the information technology, software development and business process outsourcing sectors;
  • a Professional Liability policy catering for the Insureds’ consequences of acts of negligence in their service provision;
  • an Unplanned Infrastructure Event policy that caters for exactly what it says in the title – unplanned downtime as a result of events that impact the operation of an IT infrastructure, causing loss of business income, extra expense and the potential to incur crisis management costs.
All our policies are civil liability forms and all include elements of cover provided by the main Unplanned Infrastructure Event policy. Further product offerings will follow and further detail and product sheets will be posted soon.
